Virginia Tech Hokies add prep school combo guard
James Johnson and his Hokie staff are starting make believers of the Hokie faithful
The Virginia Tech Hokies added their second commit of the fall, in top one-fifty combo guard, 6-4 Donte Clark from Chatham, VA Hargrave MilitaryAcademy on Monday.
Clark is a long and explosive combo talent who can play either guard spot, although he is more suited for the two spot as a freshman, the ball skills and tools are there to make the move to the point in time. He doesn’t always show them, because he’s been asked to be a scorer, but he has in shown it in glimpses, when he takes it off the glass and take it end to end and score with highlights or hit open teammates with pass in transition.
But, his true strength is his ability to drain his jumper from beyond the arc or the pull-up off the dribble. He is a tough match-up because of his explosive first step that is set up by his pure stroke from the perimeter. Look for him to come in and add immediate firepower for Coach Johnson’s club, then as he matures he will see more and more time at the lead guard spot.
He has shown the ability to use his length and quicks to be an above average defender at the high school level, down the road he could be a stopper in their back court at either guard spot.
He chose Virginia Tech over interest from Miami, Providence, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Tennessee and Memphis.
